Heyo guys! Here’s a quick little writing piece I have been working on. I love the idea that Cyprus and Heather are watching over May’s children, so I just kinda shoved that into a story! I spent a while on this, so it would mean a lot to me if y’all decided to check it out! I’m pretty proud of it and I think it makes a good introduction for me to this website. I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed writing it! Without farther ado, into the story!
──────────
Vibrant ribbons of color were plastered across the evening sky, rippling in the depths of the rolling waves. The perpetual tide lapped against the sand as the sun sluggishly sank into the shades of aqua and turquoise. Although the dream-like scene appeared to be pulled straight out of a fairytale, two felines darted across the sand without so much as a glance at the view.
”Bet you can’t catch me Heather!”
”Bet I can!”
The salty air caused their fur to stick up at odd angles, and energy seemed to radiate from their tiny frames. A tan kitten with cream and brown stripes skidded abruptly to a halt before whirling around to escape his pursuer. His peach-colored sister with dull gold markings was forced to throw her paws over her head, squeezing her blue eyes closed just in time to escape the flurry of sand sprayed at her.
She was rendered nearly indistinguishable against the grainy curtain that drew closed around her. Before she had the time to process her unfortunate twist in fate, paws were pressed against her shoulders and a shadow fell over her back. “Ugh Sai, get off of me!” Sai backed away, allowing his sister to get to her paws. Heather leapt up with an icy glare at her brother, grooming out her once-fluffy fur.
”Not fair,” she muttered under her breath, letting the cool water caress her paws. But Sai payed no attention, busying himself with celebrating Heather’s defeat. To any other cat he may have looked strange, slapping the air in a high-five motion and cheering along with an invisible comrade. But Heather knew what was going on with the boisterous kitten.
”We did it Cyprus!” Although she couldn’t see the husky, large with ebony and silver fur swathed in stars, she had every reason to believe he was there. Especially since she had a guardian of her own. “We’ll get them next time Heather!” The golden kitten‘s gaze was steered upwards towards the sweet voice.
As usual, the pink-tinted cocker spaniel’s eyes met hers, shining playfully. Cool mist from the waves sprayed up against her legs, mixing with the stars that danced in and out of the shafts of light around her. The silver grasp of the enchanted light show only caused her to look more dazzling, and Heather could only guess what Cyprus, a dog twice her guardian’s size, looked like.
”Yeah,” she replied, trudging farther into the ocean to let the water wash away the sand and shame that weighed her down. “Next time.” Soon, Heather’s claws barely scrapped the muddy ground, and she let the tranquil water close over her head in a calming embrace. Shielded from the world above her, the pale gold kitten allowed herself to sink to the bottom and the sand to be swept over her paws.
It wasn’t until she planned to resurface that she heard her guardian’s distant warning voice. “Heather, look out!” As soon as the words hit her, as did the impact of the wave from above. Heather was no longer sure which way was up or down, and the water that had seemed so peaceful turned on her in an instant. Her paws churned through the gelid liquid nearly as fast as her racing heart in an attempt to righten herself.
Wave after wave thrummed against the surface like distant claps of thunder, humming with destructive energy. The world around the kitten became a dazzling sea of sparking blackness, and her face pressed into the sand as bubbles escaped her lips. Just as she felt herself slipping into the shadows that folded her into it’s promising grasp, something grabbed her fur.
She found herself rising. The sheet of light drew closer, and her eyes blinked open. Almost immediately, she was blinded by the rising sunlight, and the sound of the roaring ocean flooded her ears once more. Her rescuer dragged Heather to the bank where she lay, trembling and coughing up water in a ball of lacerated fur, under the panicked amber and brown gazes of Sai and her guardian.
”Heather! Are you ok?” The kitten steered her vision upwards towards the blurry outlines of the figures positioned over her. She nodded weakly, staggering to her paws. “I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have let you go into the water,” Sai whimpered, worry edging his tone. “Come on, let’s get you back home.”

Heather sighed softly, nestling herself into her family’s fur. Their chests rose and fell with each gentle breath, much more calming than the ocean had been. As the nighttime lullaby began to swirl through the trees outside, she knew that it would be the beginning of yet another restful night. ‘And I have Heather to thank for that.’
At the thought of the spirit-dog, the golden kit lifted her chin from her paws to look around. She spotted the cocker spaniel in a desolate corner of the room, gazing out of a window with a distant expression on her face. ‘She almost looks... sad.’ Careful not to disturb her family, Heather made her way over to the guardian.
”I’m so sorry you had to rescue me,” she sighed, her voice hardly louder than a whisper. Heather smiled down at her, her brown eyes tiny pinpricks against the fluid shadows that seemed to drape around them. “Oh, it’s not that,” she promised, her fluffy tail sweeping the kitten against her fur. “It’s just that... I think our time together is drawing to an end.”
Heather looked up at the dog, her eyes widening to the size of twin moons. “What do you mean? You can’t go now!” The canine shook her head. “I don’t think you understand. I’m your guardian angle, much like your mother was to me. I promised to watch over you and protect you if something we to happen, in exchange for what she did to help me. That’s much like the case for Cyprus and your brother.”
”Cyprus stayed to get revenge, but the longer he spent with Sai, the more he was swayed to do the same. I have managed to complete what I came to do, and I’m afraid that I’m unable to stick around for much longer... in this world at least.” Heather let out a desperate mew, her ears flattening. “No, is there any way you can stay with me?” she choked out, looking in distress at her angle’s fading form.
”You always play with me and look after me. Who else will tell me how stupid my ideas are?” Heather let out a small chuckle at this, her pink tail twitching. “Your brother will of course, you know that as much as I do. And just because I’m not here doesn’t mean I’m not watching over you.” The kitten buried her face into her friend’s fur, feeling it beginning to slip through her grasp as if it was nothing more than an ethereal illusion.
It was only when her head was resting against a barren wall instead of star dusted fur that she stumbled back over to her family, her movements hazy with sleep. She lay there for a long while, stunned at the events of the day and what had just happened. She felt the need to say something, but the words were stuck in her throat.
“Thank you for everything Heather,” she finally murmured, the words escaping from her jaws as she was folded into sleep's gentle grasp.
There was no response.
