Gotta give Dad credit where credit's due: that man made every holiday so special and awesome for my brother and I. We were convinced we were too poor to get the new Pokemon games that came out the spring so we were extra shocked to find it in our Easter baskets that morning. I vividly remember the warm sunshine, scent of dew, and the pool fountain splashing in the background as we laid on the porch floor for hours playing our DSIs. Nothing could ever beat the seasonal celebrations at Dad's house, man. There's nothing more nostalgic for me than the very few, super sweet moments of joy from my childhood. I hold on to them very tight and cherish them deeply. ⚠️ Content warning: PTSD, OCD, & anxiety The peppermint thing might seem random right now...but god...is it horrific foreshadowing. My OCD often makes me obsessed with uncorrelated, strange things that I believe to impact outcomes of events. One mint before exams became one mint before every class. One mint every hour. One mint every bad thought. It became "I must break the mint in half or else it doesn't work anymore" or "I can't chew the mint, I have to wait for it to burn the insides of my mouth or else" and so on until it became genuinely damaging to me. And the mints were just the beginning. As Black Bird era continues, you'll see that I will soon gain addictions to oddities from food habits all the way to private rituals that I blindly follow out of fear that some dark consequence will occur. My OCD manifests as some kind of ring leader who forces me to put on a specific performance to avoid punishment. Show Biz, for me, is a collection of intrusive thoughts that I have to give into to compulsions to stop. It feels like a never ending show that I'm trapped in. The same rituals, the same habits, the same thoughts over and over again. While I'm currently in therapy to relieve this torturous cycle, Black Bird never had the luxury. Instead, she just played along with Show Biz- she never knew it was abnormal. Black Bird is the product of an extremely dangerous and damaging childhood. I know I have a lot of mental illnesses, but laying out every episode of my life really shows why and how it all came to be. Unchecked depression and anxiety from my childhood brewed into PTSD, OCD, and AVPD faster than anyone (myself included) could have ever realized. Only now am I seeing my 10 year old self and mourning the fact she carried all this illness all so silently. She was so creative and driven- I finished two whole "seasons" front to back of composition books. It even had a personality quiz in the back to see which Spy Cat you would be. I'll always admire this part of my life- when story telling was just beginning to become my calling in life. It's healing to know I was still able to be imaginative during one of the darkest times of my life. ⚠️ Content warning: Autism meltdown, intense emotions, & hateful language I always knew Black Bird's era was going to be challenging. I was at my worst during my pre-teen years. It was the only time in my life I tried to mold myself into the perfect idea of what my family wanted me to be. I "ran with the pack" for the first time, which meant I adopted all their evils too. I can't blame myself for that. I was an impressionable child desperate for attention and praise and the only way I was going to get that...was to be hateful. Like them. The use of the r-slur was so common in my household. It was often used against me- hitting hard since I have Autism that my family chose to ignore and punished me when I couldn't mask it well enough. I used that word to describe myself a lot during Black Bird's era. It makes my heart wrench. To know a child was spewing such hatred all because she heard it from the mentally ill adults around her. I have so much healing to do in order to repair that damage to my self image. And I'm starting by listening to her. Even if it's hateful. Even if it's awful. This is her truth. This was my reality at 9 years old. I didn't have the pleasure of going to girly sleepover parties, I didn't get to go to the state fair, I didn't get to play soccer after school- I was so far from being a kid due to my extreme childhood trauma and dire family/living circumstances. I was already an adult; parentified since my brother was born because no one wanted to raise me. So...I'm reparenting myself. I'm raising Black Bird now. That's inner child therapy work at it's finest. I'm so relieved I no longer have such hatred in my heart. But I can't ignore the fact that it was once there. It shows just how much I've grown. And how much I've hurt. People who hate...are hurt.
